Mathematical physics genius, who is studied worldwide, no more
KOLKATA: Lokenath Debnath, whose books on mathematical physics, are studied across the world, including Harvard, Berkeley, and MIT, died on March 2, in Texas.
A student of Satyen Bose and Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, Debnath was perhaps one of the last representatives of global repute of the thriving mathematics culture of Kolkata. His students from across the globe paid tribute to their unforgettable guru. “He is in the pantheon of all-time greatest Bengali mathematicians. He was sent to Britain by his teacher, Satyen Bose. Having bagged the Commonwealth fellowship and a recommendation by Bose, he secured his seat in Imperial College of London,” said Treena Basu, department chair, mathematics, Occidental College, California.
Debnath was regarded worldwide for his passion for mathematics, his high standards, infectious optimism, but probably most for his unmatched output as a scholarly writer. Debnath authored hundreds of research papers, articles and textbooks across a wide spectrum of topics in mathematics. “Seeing his students grow and flourish was an incredible source of joy for him,” said his son Jay Debnath, a distinguished professor and chair of pathology at the University of California.
Kanad Basu, an applied mathematician and professor of practice, Arizona State University, said, “Debnath’s legacy will live through his students who now teach across the world,” he said. “He would tell us stories of the fabled culture of mathematics in Kolkata in the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s.”
To welcome international students, Debnath would arrange for someone to pick them up from the airport and book an apartment. “As teaching assistants, our stipend was $9,000 for 9 months. To help out, Dr Debnath ensured every student got at least two courses to teach in summer,” said Pravendra Lohiya, Oracle ERP Techno Functional Lead, University of Texas-Pan American.
Indranil Sengupta, graduate director at University of North Dakota, said, “I would be amazed at his childlike curiosity and joy at any small advancement of mathematics anywhere in the world.”
